Top 10: SNES Cover art

I have a odd love for game art. Maybe its from my days of rushing to the toy department at my local Meijer or Toys R Us(which had the pictures you flip to look at the back.. Oh wait they still have it.) to see the latest games. Back then you didn't really know release dates. The games just showed up in the case for me to drool over.

The cover art used to be your whole choice if you were lucky enough to be buying a game that day. A few games I can remember buying solely based on the cover are:
-Final Fight
-Mortal Kombat 2
-Michael Jordan Chaos in the windy city
-Any of the three Star Wars games
-WWF Royal Rumble
-Bulls vs Blazers

I am glad I still own these boxes.

I think cover today is just awful. Just a bunch of faces most the time.

Here is some honorable mentions.
-Zelda: Link to the Past. Very simple but the black border with the gold Zelda logo just screams greatness at you.
-Bulls vs Blazer. My favorite NBA team on a SNES box? I'm in.
-Super Metroid. Its a great cover but I never played the game through until last year so the effect isn't as great on me
-Royal Rumble(its still real to me damnit!). All my favorite wrestlers(Bret Hart!) with a terrible looking chair photo shopped in with the classic Royal Rumble logo. Man wrestling used to be awesome.

10.Super Punch Out

No Mike Tyson? No problem. Not many games could survive losing its main character and see another game. This game did it since the other cartoonish characters are so great. You get to see three great ones on the cover with the huge gloves. I played this into the ground. Its way easier then the NES game but I think its more fun

9.Michael Jordan Chaos in the Windy City
Not the best game in the world but damn I loved the cover. I remember buying it at a Kaybee store. I loved MJ and he was holding a ice ball and a ball that is on fire. At this point this was all I cared about. Michael Jordan and SNES. It only made sense to buy it.

8.NBA Jam TE
They took the old cover and blew it out of the water with TE. BOOOOMMMSHHHHAAAAKKKAAALLLKKKAAA! I beat my brother 148 to 42 and he never played me again(Washington Bullets FTW).

7.Barts Nightmare
Look at the great colors and all characters. Its funny, its fun and you even get the artists name in the corner. I sold this one on ebay which I regret. This screams buy me. I did and I enjoyed the game. It was hard and frustrating which had me going "Duh!"

6.Mortal Kombat II
Again the cover just sold it for me. The font and color of the font. The globs of blood that followed made me feel so cool for playing a "adult game".

5. Super Castlevania IV
I discovered this game only 2 years ago. I am sad I missed it in its prime. The art is something that looks like its straight from a fan. Its so dark and there is no way I would have passed this up at the store as a kid if I would have noticed it.

4.Final Fight
This cover is so bad ass. I remember starring at it for weeks at the store and had no idea what it was. I got it for Christmas and the game lived up to the hype that cover brought. Its to bad that 2nd and 3rd games have some of the worst cover art.

3.Super Mario World
Its classic, the colors just pop. It sold systems. Its amazing all around. It made ask "what the hell is that green dinosaur?" WHY IS MARIO RIDING A DINOSAUR?!?!?

2.Turtles in Time
My god this thing is amazing. I loved Time Travel as a kid and then TMNT? MOTHER OF GOD... The cover is aggressive and resembles nothing of the cartoon which is awesome. I begged my mom for days.. I mean days. She finally broke and bought it. My friends and I played until the sun came up.

1.Super Mario Kart
I am proud to say I own this box still in like perfect condition. Its just pretty to look at. You get all the characters and the colors pop off the box. The art just says "Yes that is right. Mario now drives in Kart races..BUY ME!" I think I got it for XMAS. I didn't do a whole lot of sledding on that break.

8bitfetish:Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Back with the latest poster from 8bitfetish. I was going to go with The Legend of Zelda but changed my mind and decided to finish off the Turtle wall with the Original NES game. Now I know there is the Manhattan project but I never got into that one since the SNES had hit the scene at that point. I still think the cover art is great but I just don't connect with it.
Of course the poster is of 8bitfetish high quality with dark blacks and popping greens. It looks stunning next to the other two posters. I am glad I went this route. The cover of this game confused me as a kid cause they all had red. Instead of the blue, orange and purple. At that point I had no idea that the Turtles was even a comic. I just thought it was some mistake. I remember talking about the the cover art at the lunch table and asking friends if they noticed the mistake.

After reading the comics now, it came to light that this cover art came straight from TMNT issue 4.
Must be when they were coming up with ideas for covers some guy at the table said "Hey why don't we just rip a cover from one of the comics? Cheap and saves time!" I do love the cover art since its a intense battle and its just edging like the turtles should be but I do think it loses a few points for just ripping issue 4. Since Turtles was blowing up I am sure the game was pushed asap and that had something to do with it. In fact I would say more people identify this cover with the game more then the comic.
The game its self.... One of the most frustrating things you will ever pop into you're NES. This game was the first game I ever rented, I remember still loving it even though the game kicked my ass for hours. I even got it got Christmas.. See:
Now I could be frustrated everyday. Santa brought me the greatest Mario ever and coal basically. I will say I did play it like crazy despite how hard it was. It was the first turtle game and I didn't care how hard it was or that it was nothing like the show(you don't remember chain saw guy?) . I wanted to see Shredder so bad but it never happened. I could only reach the part where you drive the Turtle van around. I was dead meat after that. The game just throws a shit ton of bad guys at you with impossible platforming. That is why arcade(part 2) was such a big hit. It was like the cartoon and beatable. I still think its fun to play and revisit. But I can't take much of it. I like the cover art a lot more than the game. I want to thank 8bitfetish again for sending their amazing posters and if you are interested in buying this TMNT one you can find it here for $11.99 with fast and free S&H.

Did we just become best friends?

A few months ago I decided I needed to track down some NES cover art for my "me room"(Still no pictures..I know) and looked at some auctions on Ebay. I thought some had some pretty crappy looking quality. I found 8bitfetish which had a huge selection. The quality looked way better than the other options. They even have some classic video game scenes! I can't wait to see what more scenes they decide to push out. I decided to take the plunge and ordered the original Super Mario Bros and TMNT II The Arcade Game.

Got my order in a few days. The posters were a 13 x 19 and were full of 8 bits of awesomeness. Great colors, great quality poster and didn't break the bank($11.99+Free shipping). I am huge sucker for Nintendo box art from the NES and SNES days and I couldn't wait to get more.
The other day I was thinking I needed a NES Knight Rider poster to complement my Knight Rider display and I thought why not ask 8bitfetish to be my Friend?!?!? I mean I love Nintendo box art, their stuff is outstanding and its fast and cheap(oh yeah!). I contacted Steve the owner of 8bitfetish with the idea of getting one poster a month sent to me to review on SD80sK. So did he say yes?........ YES! I am excited to announce that SD80sK is partnering up with 8bitfetish! Reviewing Nintendo box posters sounds like a dream come true and the Knight Rider poster should be here any day! So please welcome them to the blog and go check out their amazing posters and their website(still under construction) and Ebay Store!

Hoooo! Its Cosmocats... err I mean Thundercat Art!I

A while back I drew the sword of Omens at work. While it isn't perfect(or striaght, hey I'm not a artist) it did come out better than I expected. I let it sit in my closet for about a year not knowing what to do with it or if I should do anything with it.

Brings us to today, I was hanging this old crappy Euro Thundercats or CosmoCats! I thought, this isn't worth Jaga's dick. I should just use it as a back drop for my sword. I then started to clip away! I came away with this!
I'm pretty excited about this. Came out great. It did take some patience but it paid off. My free handed Sword of Omens pops right off the comics. I like this so much I think I am going to pull this off with my four 1st print issues of the Dark Knight Returns. I have a pretty beat up trade book I can cut up. Just finding the right frame will be the tricky part. I'll post if it comes out well.

Rad Reads hates it when rides gets canceled

@theAFICIONAUTO did a great youtube video with the Hoff and a kitt replica
Its fun to see Hoff and Kitt together again but I am purest at heart and I am not a fan of the LED scanner and the tinted windows. Outside of that I will say it is a beautiful replica since they are hard to complete since finding a good Trans Am is tough and the part are crazy $$$.

The Ghostbuster ride that didn't happen.. Why god?!? This thing looks like it would have been a ton of fun.

Looks like the Disney Toy Story ride. I rode it and was great. Would have been even better if it.. WAS GHOSTBUSTERS! To bad the project got lost in the shuffle.

Batman-News has some nice news on the upcoming Batman vs Superman film. Nolan is helping with the project and Jena Malone as Robin? This is looking more and more like the Dark Knight Returns. The more it is the better.

The Angry Video Game Nerd reviews the terrible NES Beetle Juice game. He also did a two part James and Mike Mondays on one of my favorite SNES games Castlevania 4!
There isn't much to not like about this game. If you never played it, please do. Its a perfect play in October.

IS this true? Yes its true... This movie has no Dick
Ughhhhhh.. I'm sorry this just sounds like a GB spoof. I was hoping for a reboot or almost anything but this. This news is pretty much the same level of disappointment as hearing Bay was doing TMNT.

Over at the Sewer Den they checked out the Turtles in Time art.
Some outstanding pieces of tmnt art. So many different styles.

5 spooky action figures from Dino Dracula. Branded goes Monster Squad crazy. CFC does Streets of Fire. Need a Sweet TMNT Turtle Head Key Chain?

8bitfetish:Knight Rider

My Knight Rider NES poster came from 8bitfetish! It came! It came! It really is in my opinion one the best Knight Rider images there is and it came from the NES cover art. 8bitfetish really out did there selves here. The deep reds look great! The yellow pops! It tops off my Knight Rider stuff just the way I wanted it to. If you are interested in picking up this bad boy for $11.99(free S&H) than you can find it here!
I remember when I was a kid I was so excited when I saw the Knight Rider game at the store. I begged my mom for it but she wouldn't have it. So I know I was waiting for Christmas or birthday which was a long way off. I was lucky enough that my uncle rented and we played it one night and I was so pumped. I couldn't believe I was about to play my favorite TV in a video game.... Well that where the excitement started and ended as it was just terrible from the start. It was great seeing Kitt in 8 bit form but outside of that the game is impossible. I haven't played it in some time so I can't recall a whole lot but I remember enjoying the turbo boosting but Kitt has rockets I think? Every car was an enemy running you off the road. It just wasn't fun.
Even though the game sucked I always got that warm fuzzy Knight Rider feeling when ever I saw the cover art. It just kicks ass and now looks great on my wall. I already have gotten complements on it during our Christmas party. Now I did get a few question on Twitter about the posters and got some answers.

Q: Why 13 x 19 sized poster?
A: 13x19 is a pretty good natural fit for the most part. It's also bigger than 17x11. And it's not too big or too small. Can fit a good amount on your walls. You really can't do that with 32x24.

Q: Do you take requests?
A: We do request. But it's not always going to happen.  It all depends how high the resolution is on an image.

The next poster comes in Jan and its features four heroes in a half shell who made my top 10 SNES covers. Like Bart Scott once said, "CAN'T WAIT!"

Top 10:Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle Toys.

I posted over at Crooked Ninja and I want to thank Crooked Ninja for letting me share my top 10 Turtle toys from my childhood! These toys were with out a doubt some of the best toys I had. They were easily more durable then Thundercats, The Real Ghostbusters and M.A.S.K(the main stuff I played with). I never had issues with legs coming off or vehicles falling apart. I still have half of my childhood Turtles. The other half was lost in our move as a kid. My son now plays with them and loves them. On to the countdown!

Turtle toys I always wanted but never got.
-The Shredder Mutant Module
-The Technodrome
-Krangs giant body

Oh and all this Turtle cover art is fantastic. I could do a top 10 just on that alone.

10.Mutagen Man

I thought this dude was a cool toy. I remember filling him up with water and watching all his guts float around.. Along with a slice of pizza. He was sort of a mess but a unique figure.

9.Movie Foot Soldier
I liked these so much I had three of them. Way better then the hunched over cartoon foot that were "robots".

8.The Foot Cruiser
I loved this car. I even used it vs Kitt and many other adventures with Terminator toys. It was perfect for Bebop and Rocksteady and did a ton of cool things. Launching my eye balls at my 6 month old brother who sat in his swing is always a found memory.

7.Turtle Blimp
My parents hated this thing. I didn't care.. I loved it. My mom would say "It always in the way!". I'm sure it was but there was nothing like dropping some bombs on the Shredder from the sky. I think my cat popped it. Damnit Cuddles!

6.Pizza Thrower
I remember when I got this for Christmas I didn't even know what it really did. I remember turning it on and hearing that "hum" and thinking "This is..." I then shoot a pizza across the kitchen at my mom who is cooking Christmas dinner.. "AWESOME!!" It even says on the toy to not shoot at animals. First thing I did was seek revenge on Cuddles for popping my blimp! Shooting the foot was pretty great. It shot with a lot of velocity.

5.Turtle Sewer
Wow, what a great playset. I know the new one is as tall as a 6th grader but I like this one way more. I could never get enough of the man hole cover. I was always going in and out of it. The tubes were fun for hitting the foot down and then the swing! It made for a great fighting area. My mom even made little sleeping bags for all my turtles! I had the lair and all my turtles set up on a big table in a room that wasn't used. It was pretty great.

4.Super Shredder
This easily the best part of Turtles 2. It gave us Super Shredder who I thought was a bad ass when I was a kid. His figure was soooo much better then the old figure. The original Shredder is all sickly looking and has back problems. This guy could kick the crap Turtles. I have 2 of these guys. Since my brother ripped off the shoulder spikes and arms I got another. I also have one still sealed but its the re issued one not the one with the kick ass card.

3.Movie Turtles
These figures were great. Just like the Super Shredder they offered the movie in you're hands. Playmates did amazing job taking the movie turtles and getting a figure that was so life like. I still have a few of these but they are in rough shape. They weren't as durable as the original turtle toys. Arms, legs and the bandannas would come off much easier. I still have a Raph sealed but it has MOLD ALL OVER IT. Not sure what happened. If the oil that gives the figure its shine went south or what.

2.The Original Turtles
This what started it all. These four figures to me are like holy grail of turtle toys. Mean, simple and super durable. I had a lot of turtles with funny costumes and props but at the end of the day I was always using these. Sometimes I used to wish the weapons were better made but everything else was perfect. I never had the rubber heads ones that are worth so much but I wish I did now as they go for hundreds on Ebay(not that I would sell them..I love the card art to much).

1.Turtle Party Wagon
Was this thing not one of the best vehicles ever? Not just Turtle toys but any toy line. The design is beautiful. The functionality of it is awesome. How many vehicles have a roof that opens up(getting the Ghostbusters in Ecto 1 was a nightmare)? Making it so easy to put the turtles in, I spent a ton of time having road battles with the Turtle Van and the The Foot Cruiser. I played with for hours on end and I unfortunately lost mine in the move... and I've been meaning to pick up the new remake but $40 is a bit steep when you got kids, house and all that good stuff.

I just want to thank Crooked Ninja for having me and I was honored I could share my top 10 Turtle Toys with all the CL readers! Cowabunga!
